“Why aren’t we talking more about this?”

November is Men’s Health Awareness month AKA Movember. You may have noticed moustaches being on-trend in November. There’s the handlebar, the horseshoe, the Charlie Chaplin, the patchy stache (made that one up!), and the list goes on. What you may not have realized is that men around the world are doing this for a good cause- to raise awareness, funds, and start conversations to “help save a bro”.

So what does saving a bro mean exactly? Movember has put together the stats:

  • Globally, men die nearly 6 years earlier than women

  • 1 in 9 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetime

  • Testicular cancer is the most common cancer in young men

  • 6 out of 10 suicides in the US are men

These stats are alarming. Why aren’t we talking more about this?

This November is an opportune time to start spreading awareness. The Movember Foundation, which was founded in Melbourne, Australia, has been around since 2003. It started with two men and has since grown to five million mo bros and sistas globally- that’s right, even girls can get involved. Their mission “to help men live happier, healthier, longer lives- this is what drives every single one of our 1,250 men’s health projects.”

There are a few fun ways to get involved, as an individual or group, this Movember. Firstly, sign up as a Mo Bro or Mo Sista then choose your adventure:

  1. Grow a stache! Or lead the charge as a Mo Sista by getting a group of Mo Bros together to grow their stache’s. It’s a conversation starter and makes a statement that you support men’s health awareness.

  2. Walk or run 60 miles over the month: 60 miles for the 60 men lost to suicide each hour, every hour. It sounds like a lot but break that down into a daily bite-size activity and it’s about 5,000 steps per day. You got this!

  3. Host a Mo-ment- raise funds while getting your friends, family, or colleagues together. Movember has put together a complete guide on how to host events including decorative options. You can learn more here.

If you’re interested in getting your workplace involved and y’all are particularly competitive,  Movember also offers the Movember Business Club where your organization will go head to head with other companies.

So this November, start the conversation with a stache!
