“May is Mental Health awareness Month, and it has never been more important”

Mental Health Awareness Month is a great opportunity to pause and reflect on where we are currently with our own mental health. An opportunity to connect with others and provide support to them. It’s also a time to be reminded of the importance of fighting stigma & discrimination when so many are not able to access equal treatment for support with mental illness.

We’ve put together this article outlining ways for you to get involved, initiatives UNCrushed are participating in that you can attend as well as what other big non-profits are doing to increase awareness during May.

Ways To Get Involved

Looking for ways you can get involved? Here’s a few ideas:

  • Reach out & offer support: Think about who you interact with on a daily basis that would find this information useful for themselves or others. You never know just how important it could be for them.

  • Don’t perpetuate stigmas: Be mindful of your words and actions.

  • Personal Experiences: Read some of the personal experiences shared by members of the UNCrushed community. By reading about lived experience, we hope you will feel less alone in your own journey. If you feel ready and want to take a big step of vulnerability, why not share your own personal experience! You can contribute your personal experience here.

  • Show your support: You can donate to the UNCrushed mission here, or donate to many of the amazing non-profits that are focused on Mental Health. Every cent truly counts.

  • Volunteer: Got a few hours free each week and want to give back? You can volunteer with UNCrushed by sending us an email here.

mental health awareness month Background

Each year millions of Americans face the reality of living with a mental illness. A staggering 450 million people worldwide are currently living with a mental illness, yet nearly two thirds of people with a known mental illness never seek treatment.

Whilst the importance of mental wellness has increased significantly over the last few years, the COVID-19 pandemic has accelerated it lightyears so that it’s certainly a priority for many now. The coronavirus has caused significant disruption to everyone, in individual ways (we’re not in the same boat, but we’re in the same storm). It’s brought with it a lot of worry, isolation, loneliness, grief and anxiety that everyone is experiencing – all five in five.

Since 1949, Mental Health America (MHA) and their affiliates across the country have led the observance of ‘May is Mental Health Month’, and it has never been more important than this year.

Mental Health America – Tools 2 thrive

Since 1949, Mental Health America and our affiliates across the country have observed May is Mental Health Month by reaching out to millions of people through the media, local events, and screenings. We invite other organizations to join us in spreading the word that mental health is something everyone should care about by using the May is Mental Health Month toolkit materials and conducting awareness activities.

The COVID-19 pandemic has had a profound impact on the mental health of people of all ages. Now, more than ever, it is critical to reduce the stigma around mental health struggles, because that stigma often prevents individuals from seeking help.

In 2021, we will continue with our theme of Tools 2 Thrive, providing practical tools that everyone can use to improve their mental health and increase their resiliency regardless of their personal situation.

Our toolkit includes sample materials for communications and social media as well as printable handouts on the following topics:

  • Adapting after trauma and stress

  • Dealing with anger and frustration

  • Getting out of thinking traps

  • Processing big changes

  • Taking time for yourself

  • Radical acceptance

National Alliance on Mental Illness – You Are Not Alone

Each year millions of Americans face the reality of living with a mental illness. During May, NAMI joins the national movement to raise awareness about mental health. Each year we fight stigma, provide support, educate the public and advocate for policies that support people with mental illness and their families.

For 2021’s Mental Health Awareness Month NAMI will continue to amplify the message of “You Are Not Alone.” We will use this time to focus on the healing value of connecting in safe ways, prioritizing mental health and acknowledging that it’s okay to not be okay through NAMI’s blog, personal stories, videos, digital toolkits, social media engagements and national events.

Together, we can realize our shared vision of a nation where anyone affected by mental illness can get the appropriate support and quality of care to live healthy, fulfilling lives — a nation where no one feels alone in their struggle.
